Singtel, Ericsson to test new Internet of Things technology

SINGAPORE: Local telco giant Singtel announced on Monday (Feb 22) that it will trial Narrow Band Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technology in the second half of 2016 as part of its partnership with Sweden’s Ericsson.

Their collaboration, in place since January last year, aims to test technologies to prepare Singtel’s current 4G LTE network to support the expected rapid growth of connected devices as Singapore targets 5G availability in 2020.

The NB-IoT technology is a standard focused on providing wider coverage and less complex devices, specially built for the Internet of Things - the network of physical objects which enables collection and exchange of data.

“IoT connectivity is an important part of Singapore’s enterprises and supports the Singapore Government’s Smart Nation initiative,” said Tay Soo Meng, Singtel’s Group Chief Technology Officer.
