The Internet of Things (IoT) is maturing, and has even been taken for granted in several industries. We’ve climbed the peaks of inflated expectations and are increasingly often encountering the undercurrent of organisations actively (re)designing their business and technology with fair and inclusive models to succeed in the data-driven economy. At the same time, a darker, more concerning narrative of surveillance capitalism, weak security, and privacy lures in the the clefts. Since its inception ThingsCon has been an on- and offline environment providing a place to discuss issues within this space needed to be addressed and why. Now, 5 years into ThingsCon, the need for responsible technology has entered the mainstream debate. We need ethical technology, but how? With the lines between IoT, AI, machine learning and algorithmic decision-making increasingly blurring it’s time to offer better approaches to the challenges of the 21st century: Don’t complain, suggest what’s better! In this spirit, going forward we will focus on exploring how connected devices can be made better, more responsible and more respectful of fundamental human rights. At ThingsCon, we gather the finest practitioners; thinkers & tinkerers, thought leaders & researchers, designers & developers to discuss and show how we can make IoT work for everyone rather than a few, and build trustable and responsible connected technology.

One of the fastest-growing economies in the world, Vietnam has been rapidly growing its IT sector to pursue the aim of becoming an industrial country by 2020. The 2016 edition of Asia IoT Business Platform in Hanoi, Vietnam, was a testimony of the massive potential for IoT in Vietnam. While receiving massive attention now with tech giants like VNPT, FPT and CMC identifying IoT as the “leading trend” of tech, IoT is, in fact, not new to the Vietnamese tech scene. Smart City projects started out as early as 2008, and since then has appeared in at least 5 more cities. The healthcare industry identified Big Data and Analytics as its greatest concern in improving competitiveness, according to a survey done by IDC in 2015. The Government pledged to invest USD 111.6m from the State Budget in the ICT sector by 2020, incentivising local and international firms to invest in the country. In 2013, the Ministry of Science and Technology set up Silicon Valley Startup Ecosystem to stimulate growth and encourage Vietnamese to venture into tech startups. On 7 July 2016, Hoa Lac IoT Lab – the first IoT lab in Vietnam – was officially launched at Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park, a science city located in the outskirts of Hanoi. Attended by Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Pham Dai Duong, the lab aims to support technology startups focusing on IoT to build applications and solutions in Vietnam. Last year’s program witnessed several interesting IoT developments and deployments by local enterprises and organisations. Apart from the smart cities race where Vietnamese cities such as Da Nang, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh City are keen in driving their respective e-Government platforms, local companies such as Vinamilk and Cau Dat Farm are already ahead in the IoT journey, implementing sensors and big data analytics to support their processes.

When Myanmar opened up to the world after 49 years of military rule, many corporations turned their eye to glance at the local market. As time goes by, it has been realized that the country poses enough challenges to profit corporations in a few years’ time, and not for the present. In fact, Myanmar was ranked 167 out of 189 countries in the World Bank’s ease of doing business ranking in 2015, and dropped 3 places by June 2016. In response to alleviating the economy’s pain and developing the local market, in July 2016, Myanmar’s State Counselor, Aung San Suu Kyi released the long awaited 5-year economic policy. Although the plan has been critiqued to be vague and unstructured, it addresses the areas, in which the country is interested to increase spending. The fourth point decrees that Myanmar would prioritize infrastructure development, such as power, roads, ports, and in concocting digital strategy as well as e-Government system. Myanmar has signaled its readiness to reintegrate with the world economy through recent socioeconomic and political reforms. These reforms allow Myanmar to achieve strong and sustainable economic growth and improve the standard of living of its population. Myanmar recognizes ICT has a key enabler and a priority for socioeconomic development. The Framework for Economic and Social Reform, formulated in 2013, sets out policy priorities until 2016, which include the development of mobile telephony and internet.
