Edward C. Baig: Internet of things: hyped but here to stay

LAS VEGAS—What are we to make of this Internet of Things thing?

You couldn’t walk around CES this week without hearing about or bumping into products related in some way to IoT, the tech industry’s inelegant way of describing all things connected.

The theme broadly encompasses connected appliances, connected cars, wearable tech, smart health and fitness, security cameras, smart TVs, smart clothing, smart homes, smart cities, not to mention the services being layered on top of all of these. Your fridge is smart, your bed is smart, even the bra a woman might wear is smart. Has anything been left back?

IoT represents a genuine trend but one in which the hype is in overdrive.
