Rajasthan town to get ‘smart city' tag

It seems we are seeing the smart city teams lining up. For the USA IBM/Cisco, for Japan Toshiba, Itochu, Mitsubishi and Mitsu. We are wondering who will be on the field for Europe, Russia, China and Brasil. From the Hindu newspaper: "JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has decided to develop Bhiwadi-Neemrana town in Alwar district as a “smart city” as part of a smart community development project in collaboration with the agencies of the Japanese Government. {C}Work on a similar initiative for Jodhpur is currently in progress.{C} Citizens, business organisations and the State Government will jointly work under the project for evolving services with the bare minimum carbon emissions in the smart city. Besides, an integrated technology would be developed for water supply, solid waste management, power production, transport and infrastructure development. According to an official release here, the Japanese consultants will examine the “practical aspects” of the smart city's establishment, while Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) would finance the ambitious project. Technical experiments for the project are likely to start by the end of year 2011. The release said funds for local consultation services would be obtained from the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor project. After successful completion of experiments, the Japanese Government would encourage technology giants such as Toshiba, Itochu, Mitsubishi and Mitsui to make investments in Bhiwadi-Neemrana, where the industrial areas have already attracted a large number of entrepreneurs."
