This workshop was held in 2009 during the Council launch, by Slava Kozlov os Summn.
Interactive role-playing workshop to explore possible futures of the Internet of Things. During the workshop the teams will construct their own versions of the future IoT by taking a few specific 'roles' and following a special 'gameplay', collaborative and competitive at the same time. An open, yet structured process will help the participants to express - and reflect upon - their ideas about the future of the Internet of Things, learn from each other and together construct more meaningful and integral version of the new emerging realities.
The Internet of Things is an emerging socio-technological formation, based on the sophisticated digital technologies and new evolving organizational principles (such as open networks or self-organization). In a simplified version it refers to the ‘networks of smart objects’ capable to sense and response to the environments, and interact with each other by transmitting event- and location-related information. In a much broader sense, IoT claims to be a new foundation of our future living, aimed at redefining in many ways our societies, economies, and cultures. The ways we work and communicate, shop and learn, educate our children and ourselves – all these and many other sides of our lives have to undergo through massive transformation thanks to IoT.
Because of its potential transformative power, the concept of the IoT in the center of hot debates where multiple agencies – businesses, governments, academia, activates, to name just a few – argue about various version of possible and preferable developments. Is the IoT a threat or opportunity? Should we control its developments or let it evolves ‘as is’? And who is deciding who is ‘we’?
Playing with the Futures
We suggest an interactive workshop where participants will be exploring multiple possible futures of the Internet of Things. During the workshop the teams will construct their own versions of the future IoT by taking a few specific 'roles' and following a special 'gameplay' to facilitate creative, competitive/collaborative role-playing.
An open, yet structured process will help the participants to express - and reflect upon - their ideas about the future of the Internet of Things, learn from each other and together construct more meaningful and integral version of the new emerging reality.
Most importantly, through this playful thought experiments they will identify what are those required transformations of themselves need to happen to let these possible futures emerge, and what the new skills and mindsets we need to develop and hone to prepare for such futures.
Summ()n is a team of practitioners that can help people to work with the futures. We help people to imagine and construct more diverse and more interesting possible futures. We help to experience and ‘play’ with these futures, to try and probe them in engaging yet risk-free environments, together with other people. Most importantly, we help people to prepare for these new emerging realities – by changing and transforming themselves, by learning some new – and unlearning some old – ideas.
The workshop will be moderated by Nikolay Jaremko, Katerina Khomenchuk, Otto Kokke and Slava Kozlov.
