Madison Reidy: Internet of Things product designer warns of worsening mass consumerism

Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino created a lamp to help families keep in contact but she says not all connected technology products had such a sound social purpose.

Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino created the Goodnight Lamp to help separated families keep in touch.

If you touch the lamp it lights up your family members' lamps through mobile phone reception, acting as a signal to notify them when you are free to talk.
She said she created it because she wished she had made better use of her free time when living in London to speak with her late father who lived in Canada.
