Short interview with Dave Bell from Vesternet
"We launched the site Vesternet 12 months ago initially planning to offer ZigBee products. But then we realised there were lots of other similar wireless technologies that would begin to touch peoples lives. So we expanded the site to include other products available now such as RFID & EnOcean, but also to discuss and educate people on the availability of up and coming technologies like Bluetooth Low Energy and Continua.
We've put a lot of work into educating the user on how compatible each item is. So if you look at any product in the site, under the price there's details about 'Technology' and 'Compatibility'. Furthermore, by clicking on those links, the user can get lots more info about the compatibility aspects of the technology. We realise not everything works together yet, so this aspect is important when people make choices about wireless sensor networks.
In about a weeks time, we'll also launch our Wireless Home & Office planners, which really makes it easy for a customer to build their Internet of Things, by clicking on appliances in the home, the user will be presented with suggestions on which sensors we recommend.
We have a vision for all these open standard technologies to work together, and further down the line we'd begin to offer additional services around web based user interfaces. The idea is that you could buy a sensor, and have it immediately pair with your existing wireless network with no setup effort needed. This, along with the new smart grid initiatives, will really spawn the new generation of consumer orientated services around wireless sensors."
