Mobiles connect things via barcodes

The current generation mobile phones can decode product barcodes with ease. In this way mobile phones are becoming a medium to connect everyday objects and provide an ‘Internet of Things' environment. This technology can be used to personalize and extend the package of products and enables consumers to choose those products that are in line with their personal values and preferences, such as good health, respect for the environment and ethical choices.

Mobi.Ubiq provides a framework to connect products via barcodes and delivers open source barcode scanners for IPhone, Android and Nokia (Symbian). To deliver sustainability, allergy and health information about products, existing data sources are used and new data sources can be added. Mobi.Ubiq facilitates a Service Directory where anyone can add and use information discovery services. These services can be selected on the mobile device and based on personal preferences data is displayed on the device. Currently services are available include for gluten allergy, climate impacts, recipes and price comparison.

Peter van Waart

Peter van Waart is interested human values-centered design of meaningful products, services and environments. His current project Meaningful Urban Design aims to deliver design guidelines for meaningful interactive installations in public spaces. Peter is a lecturer and researcher on Human Centered ICT at the School of Communication, Media and Information Technology at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. He holds an MA in Educational Sciences and has experience in the multimedia design industry and market research. Peter is establishing his PhD at Delft University with his research "Designing for Meaningful Technology". As lecturer he teaches how emerging technologies and media can be used in designing meaningful (brand) experiences. Peter coordinates the minor Experience Branding and the study programmes Mentality (human values based segmentation), Research for Design, Envisioning Information and Creative Research Tools.

Liam Bannon

Liam Bannon heads the Interaction Design Centre at the University of Limerick, Ireland where his interests include human-centred computing, HCI, CSCW, and interaction design. He has been a long-time advocate for a larger role for human and social agency in information technology programmes. He is involved in the new European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies (EUSSET).

Djordje Djokic LL.M.

Djordje Djokic is a Legal Advisor and Researcher at Bearstech, a Paris based ICT Company. He is also a PhD candidate at the Université Montesquieu – Bordeaux IV. His main field of research is protection of privacy on the web as a part of European human rights law. He is the author of the newly released Protection de la vie privée sur Internet et Conseil de l’Europe, a book exploring the evolution of the concept of privacy in Europe.

In addition to law, Djordje likes classical music, information technologies and foreign languages.
