IoT: an ontological shift

Finally also Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a full reversal of former positions on privacy is saying: “I don’t believe society understands what happens when everything is available, knowable and recorded by everyone all the time.” (source) This is indeed what is happening in a move towards smart environments. It seems that Google has decided to become a player in Internet of Things, realizing all stakeholders need to raise debates and allow for controversies, instead of trying to play down logical fears of a growing number of informed citizens. As the key to the gratification for both parties (systems and citizens) is the right balance and trade off going into hiding is not the best option.

Peter van Waart

Peter van Waart is interested human values-centered design of meaningful products, services and environments. His current project Meaningful Urban Design aims to deliver design guidelines for meaningful interactive installations in public spaces. Peter is a lecturer and researcher on Human Centered ICT at the School of Communication, Media and Information Technology at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. He holds an MA in Educational Sciences and has experience in the multimedia design industry and market research. Peter is establishing his PhD at Delft University with his research "Designing for Meaningful Technology". As lecturer he teaches how emerging technologies and media can be used in designing meaningful (brand) experiences. Peter coordinates the minor Experience Branding and the study programmes Mentality (human values based segmentation), Research for Design, Envisioning Information and Creative Research Tools.

Despite being tempted by other disciplines, Alex decided to explore the esoteric world of computer science, mainly because of his tension between creativity and mathematical rigour. He enjoyed his stay in Milan, where he attended its world famous University, and became passionate of artificial intelligence, soft computing and software engineering. After serving his duty in the army, as many of us, he lent his abilities to the private sector, and joined Amadeus in 1997, to become -against his will- an expert of Unisys OS 2200 assembler. He then managed to unchain his spirit again and joined the University of Tennessee in summer 2000, where he was involved in the seminal work and development of the Internet Backplane Protocol. After surviving "Nax-vul" for 18 months, he managed to get back to Europe, and in particular to Lyon, where he had a position as Research Visitor at the Ecole Normale Superieure. For two years, he developed the relationship between the novel storage concepts and active networking. He then worked for RIPE NCC, working on project regarding the whois database such as the AfriNIC creation, and after one year of rainy A'dam in November 2004 he moved to the sunny south of France, to integrate the Hitachi Sophia Antipolis Labs. There he got involved in various projects, regarding Grid and Cloud (with particular regards to data aspects), Autonomic Communications and RFID. In 2007 he became chair of the then RFID (now Internet of Things) Working Group of the EU Technological Platform EPoSS, and from 2010 he started his own company, Alessandro Bassi Consulting, acting as a Technical Coordinator for the Internet of Things Architecture (IoT-A) FP7 IP project for Hitachi, Ltd.

Philippe de Matteis, MSC (Physics and AI), MBA, founder, CEO and Senior consultant at DMPH consulting, he has been involved in RFID and the contactless industry since 1995 following 10 years within the IT and software industry. He was in charge of RFID development in Europe for OMRON electronics from 1999 till 2005. Before joining Omron, he was VP marketing at Stella electronics, a RFID and contactless system design company.
