The Bijlmer Euro by Christian Nold
From June until the end of September 2010 you can get a unique discount at seventeen shops in Amsterdam Zuidoost just by paying with Bijlmer Euros. The Bijlmer Euro is a regular five or ten Euro note with a re-usable and removable sticker containing an RFID-tag (comparable to the chip in a disposable travel card). By scanning this chip every time the note is used to buy something, the flow of money in the local area will be made visible in a publicly accessible way.
The participating shops have been chosen because they give a strong representation of the Bijlmer economic network, often offering unique goods and forming social hubs where different local communities meet.
The Bijlmer Euro is a complimentary local currency for South East of Amsterdam which creates economic benefits for local people, inspires social connections and builds a complex network identity for the Bijlmer.
“The Bijlmer Euro is a Parasitical Currency that piggybacks on the ubiquity of the Euro as a vehicle for its own mobility. A Bijlmer Euro is worth more than a normal Euro because it carries local trust and good will.”- Christian Nold
One and a half years in the making, the Bijlmer Euro is a social art project created by British artist Christian Nold and commissioned by Imagine IC in co-operation with De Waag Society.
