Bell Labs HCI research position: “Augmented Objects for a DiY Internet-of-Things”
For the Ambient Media department of the Bell Labs research division of Alcatel-Lucent (Antwerp, Belgium), we are looking for a Senior Researcher in Physical Computing. The Ambient Media department in Bell-Labs focuses on creating new Application Concepts and Application Creation Environments for so- called "ambient" applications in which the userinterface and application intelligence (HW & SW) are distributed over (and incorporated in) the environment.
The department performs multi-disciplinary research (combining human sciences, design & computer science) to realize the vision of an open technology standard, eco-system and marketplace for user-created Internet- of-Things applications. We believe that nontechnical users can be empowered to create (both physically as “programmatically”) their own Do-it-Yourself Internet-of-Things applications. The research encompasses both
software creation paradigms and platforms as smart objects as interaction means in the creation/consumption process. The www.touchatag.com venture is a spin-off of our previous research.
In the spirit of open innovation, we are leading the European Do-it Yourself Smart Experiences (www.dyse.org) consortium that collaborates to realize precisely this vision of an open Internetof- Things for the people.
We are looking for a Senior Researcher in HCI who:
- Is curious on how non-technical users could create their own smart Internet-of-Things experiences
- Wants to explore the concept of intuitive Ambient Programming
- Is eager to work in a multi-disciplinary team (sociologist, computer scientists, designers, usability expert, creativity coach and marketeer are already onboard)
- Wants to create. Is active in prototype design & development (both conceptual, HW and SW).
- Wants to conduct research in the domain of physical computing & smart objects, from conceptualisation, HW & SW prototyping up to writing patents & publications.
- Has experience in Media, Human-Computer Interaction (preferably in the domain of ubiquitous computing), including active development of demonstrators. Strong affinity with advanced media applications technology and usage.
· Has solid experience in at least one of the following domains:
- Human-Computer Interaction (preferably in the domains of Physical Computing, Tangible User Interfaces, Smart Objects, sensors, rapid prototyping, Interactive Spaces, …)
- Ambient intelligence technologies
· Wants to deepen and apply this expertise in the context of the Bell Labs environment
Your application will be treated confidentially.
Kind regards,
Lieven Trappeniers - Bell Labs lieven.trappeniers@alcatel-lucent.com
