April 9: Global Internet of Things Day: Rotterdam

If - according to the IOT - everything is connected: where does that leave the definition of home; i.e.: what is the relation between technology and our home -environment? What does ultimate connectivity means for architects, builders, craftsmen; the moment we start dwelling? Should there be a space which secures us; does that need another kind of privacy? Usman Haque once said: 'Home is not a place, but a composition of fragments' .

Having said that: after Maslow's physiological first basics we still need to define and shape that environment..

If that is the case, we still need place and imagination; we still need at some moment structure and materials; connectivity and recognition.

These questions and many others are the ones we will try to answer on April 9th, in a meeting in Rotterdam; a follow-up of the Home-Sense workshop in Brussels.

Alexander Gluhak

Alex is a senior researcher at the University of Surrey, where he works on real world information infrastructures based on the Internet of Things. He is technical manager of the SENSEI project, a large-scale European project that focuses on the Integration of the Physical into the Digital World of the Future Internet. Alex is also active in the Future Internet Assembly, where he is care taker of the Real World Internet community. His recent interests are amongst others capturing characteristics of human behaviour with the help of the Internet of Things and the application of machine learning techniques for its interpretation and prediction.

Francesca Bria

Francesca Bria is is currently a PhD Researcher at Imperial College Business School. In her research she's investigating how design-driven methodologies can foster the direct involvement of users and communities in co-designing and co-producing future urban systems and services. She's also looking at the way ubiquitous and pervasive urban technology will impact collaborative creativity and socio-economic practices. Francesca has an Msc in E-business and Innovation from the University College of London, Birkbeck and she is currently working as Tutor in Business Strategy and Organisational Change at Queen Mary University in London. She is political consultant and expert on Innovation policy, Media and the Information Society for the Region of Lazio, the Province of Rome and the European Commission. Francesca has a background working as video journalist, writer, filmmaker and network activist and she’s an advocacy adviser on access to knowledge and collaborative production in the digital economy.

Nicola Fabiano

Nicola Fabiano is a lawyer specialized in civil law and digital law (new technologies, privacy and ICT law). He is counsel in the Italian Supreme Court (Suprema Corte di Cassazione), a member, on behalf of the Italian node, of the European social networking task force called from the European Commission, and external expert and consultant for ADICONSUM (Italy) for the “EAST2 - Easy to Stop-it” project.
